We will hear the bible make a provocative claim: that there is just one God who owns and rules the world and all the nations in it. It is a very provocative claim because it is a claim that ultimately there is one truth and one right, that all cultures and nations should embrace and submit to. This flies in the face of modern Australian political culture which insists that there are many [even conflicting] truths and rights which must be recognised and accepted in a multi-cultural society. In some ways it feels like we are back in the first century where Christianity announced to a polytheistic multi-cultural Roman Empire, There is only one God - ours! At the time the official policy of the ruling class was to embrace and accept the many gods of the many peoples in the empire (they even gave each god their own statue in the Pantheon in Rome). And so from its very beginning Christianity has clashed head on with the political power of its age by claiming there is one God, one truth and one Saviour of all men. As it was then, so it is now.
